Silence in a Noisy World

Silence in a Noisy World
A Hike in Zion National Park

Greetings from the Northern tip of Arizona.

Early tomorrow, we travel north to Bryce Canyon National Park and then four more hours north to Moab, Utah–so I thought I'd send you a quick note today.

This evening, Michelle and I went a mile back to a private canyon owned by the Airbnb owners to catch some sunset pictures.

As we explored the canyon, waiting for the sun to go down, something other than the red rocks captured my attention–SILENCE.

There was complete silence as we stood there.

No birds, no crickets, no frogs. Nothing but silence.

Towering above three sides of us were red jagged rocks. Between the right and left walls was a plain the size of a football field, covered with sand, cacti, and juniper trees.

Howls eventually broke the silence by coyotes that we later saw scaling the side of the canyon rocks around us.

The Canyon at our Airbnb

Standing there in the silence, I was reminded of how much noise is in our lives. Noise that clutters our minds brings anxiety to our souls and crowds out God.

The silence of this canyon is impossible to bring back with me, but trips like this remind me that finding time in the busyness of life to have silence is essential.

I'm convinced one of Satan's greatest strategies is to fill our lives with so much noise we can't hear the still, small voice of God.

Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
