Welcome to this week's edition of Nuggetology, where we search the Scriptures for Biblical nuggets of wisdom.

This week's nugget asks, what do people see in you?

After you read, check out Thursday's podcast that went deeper on the thought of Striving for Quiet. You'll also find our most recent study on Hebrews.

Now, here's a verse, a thought, and a quote for the week.

Verse of the Week

â€śAnd that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.” (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12)

Thought of the Week

Last week, I covered verse 11 above about studying, laboring, or striving for a quiet life, and I'm still mulling over that phrase in my head. I've deemed it the NUGGET OF THE YEAR so far for me.

This week, I want to revisit this passage to touch on verse 12. Specifically, the first part which begins with the word "THAT."

The word "that" ties in with Paul's commands to study to be quiet, mind our own business, and work hard. When we live out those commands, we walk honestly towards people who are "without."

So, what does that mean, and why does it matter? Glad you asked...

Walking Honestly means to live in a way that could be described as decently, properly, or in an honorable manner. In a way that doesn't cause offense.

This is important because of Who we represent and who is watching. A basketball player recently got on social media with a gun and acted in an immature way. The team suspended him in part because of how he conducted himself as a member of their organization.

Why would we think God expects less?

Surrounded by people in danger of eternity in hell, we must take seriously the command to walk honestly among people without Christ.

Take a second to do some reflection.

  • Does what you post on social media honor Christ?
  • Does what you talk about at work honor Christ?
  • Do you kids see Christ in you at home?

What do people see in you?

Quote of the Week
