God's Reminder

Welcome to the 92nd issue of Pulpit to Pew Crew Newsletter, I'm Brad McClure, and we are on a journey through the Bible in 2023.

It's day 72 in our journey through the Bible, and we are now anchored in the book of Deuteronomy.

Has this book sounded familiar?

Deuteronomy means "second law." It's not a new law, but rather the second giving of the law.

Israel has been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years due to their unbelief and disobedience. Finally, the last of that generation is dying off, and God is about to let the next generation enter the Promise Land.

Before they go, God wants to review the law initially given back in Exodus at Mt. Sinai and apply it to Israel's life in the Promise Land.

Deuteronomy also has instructions and exhortations concerning the conquest of the land and their relationship to the inhabitants of the land.

KEY VERSES

And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law. [47] For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it. ~ Deuteronomy 32:46-47

In the New Testament Jesus was tempted with a question. A clever man decided to ask Jesus which of the laws was the most important. (Matthew 22:37)

Jesus' answer came from Deutoronomy 6:5.

"And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy might."

Another passage to look forward to as we read this book is found all the way at the end.

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: [20] That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them. ~Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Verse twenty reminded Israel and us today of the importance of loving, obeying, and clinging to God. That is life!

God wanted a relationship with his people. He wanted this generation to trust Him and enjoy the land he promised.

Likewise today God wants us to trust him and live in the promises of His Word.
